If there is one event that defines Alaska it is the 1100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome. It pits men and women and their dog teams against the wilderness, subzero temperatures, blizzard force winds, whiteout conditions, wind-chills of -100 degrees and all the other nasty surprises that Mother Nature can cook up in the dead of the Alaskan winter. Continue reading →

(Excerpts from Jan 2012 Alaska Magazine) We expect teenagers to do some crazy things such as pierce their noses. But when the teenager is a brown bear and the piercing is a three hooked fishing lure from an unattended tackle box, Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologists are going to have to step in. That’s what happened on the bank of the Chilkoot River … Continue reading →

January in Anchorage saw record setting cold weather and snowfall! We had a whopping 123 inches of snow at the PAT headquarters.

Our average temperature for January was 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, which doesn’t sound so bad till you factor in all the below zero days it took to reach this balmy average temperature! Fairbanks average temperature for January was -27 below zero! Continue reading →
